Eddie Izzard 43 marathons! 03/01/2012

We got talking down the pub about what was the most incredible physical thing a human has done, give birth was top of the list and running 43 marathons in a row the second.  

This would be an incredible achievement for any athlete but Eddie Izzard a middle age comedian rewrote the book on human physiology and what the human body can do. He completed 43 marathons in just 52 days running at least a marathon every day – sometimes as much as 31 miles – with just one rest day a week.

If he said 2 marathons in row would be good or maybe 10 but 43 as staggering achievement.

The abdominal area is one of the hardest areas of the body to develop
muscles since this is where most of the body fat is deposited. Getting six pack abs requires a balance between ab workouts and discipline. Ab workouts are mostly done simple by lying down and trying to retain the position in which the muscles in the abdominal area are flexed inward. This may seem easy but once you start the exercise, you will find it very difficult to maintain. The crunch and the bicycle are two of the most efficient ways of getting six pack abs. The crunch is simply using the power of the abdominals to lift the body from the waist up while the bicycle stimulates riding a bicycle while lying down.

I was lucky enough to win some Health and Strength magazines from the 1930,s on ebay. There was so many great physiques that anybody
would be please to emulate today. They do look light compared with the bulk of today. Bearing in mind this is well before the introduction of Dianabol in the mid 50s which started introducing bulk and mass. They did look very statuesque.
The tready supplements of the time were the likes of Oxley's Muscle Food, Iron Jelliods, Vitapon interestingly non of the ingredients are mentioned! 
And long before Royce Gracie jumped in the octogon Ju-Jitsu is often mentioned in articles and various mail order course's.

The first key to building bigger stronger muscles is progression. Weight training should be more correctly called Progressive Weight Training. 

The  second key is using the most effective weight training equipment in the world.  It is not a machine, it is not free weights, nor is it a rubber band, a trendy kettle bell or a big fat truck tire.

 Answer=A note book and pen.
 
A bodybuilding journal/log is the key to ever-increasing progressive overload and is the most important bodybuilding equipment you will ever work with.
Get a training log, Start using it!

How To Avoid Back Pain Tips 01/14/2012

I have had a Bad Back start to the New Year. Started the Christmas holidays with having a good tidy up in the Dungeon. Woke up the following morning with a damn painful back. Did not feel anything go or pop when tidying the weights away non the less it is pretty debilitating and a month later still not able to train because I tidied up Gerrr! Feel fat and unfit not being able to train Gerrr!!!!

Lessons learned from this foolishness....
How To Avoid a Bad Back tips
Sit on the couch watching crap TV scoffing beer and pies all day!
Do not tidy up the Gym... Ever.
Do not go anywhere near a Gym or try to keep fit!
If you must tidy up warm up first.

Get someone else to tidy up.

Stay Strong Lift heavy but watch your back.

Aids to better body building 01/01/2012

I read this short article in a copy of Health and Strength dated 1950. It seems appropriate to start the year with this simple but apparently timeless advice.

"The whole secret is to start correctly on a sound progressive routine. Remember, also, that better and quicker results in bodybuilding can be achieved by paying a little attention to diet and the general mode of living.
Try to observe the following simple health rules. Earlier to bed. As short rest after every meal. No smoking or strong drink. Drink more water and fruit juices and less tea and coffee. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Don't over eat. Keep in the open air as much as possible. Never ride when you can walk and above all look on the bright side always. A healthy man is a happy man"
  

Although dated these are fine tenets to live by and it would be a good start to year resovling to live by them. I think the only thing I would add is be kind and toughtful towards others.
