This is the first article on Real People Real Training and features Ron Sanderson a strongman vet from down under. 
The tyre lifts was at the strongman competiton. The lift was 200kg lifts for as many reps as possible in 70 seconds.
I squeezed in 13 lifts and was stuffed after that!
 

My Weight Lifting Back Ground

I first did some weights back in the 1970s but there were few gyms to go to and not much support for it. Like many of us, I was fairly thin as a teenager, almost puny but fairly fit aerobically.

I have led a fairly active life and my day job involves a lot of physical work I have played many sport in my life which gave me a good base to start from.

I have never smoked or used drugs which destroy your health. I am sure this has helped me remain so fit and active over the years.

As an older lifter, I have found that my strength and muscle size has gained but at a much slower rate then if I was twenty. The gains are hard earned but real, progressive and pleasing
.

Power Lifting

By the time the 1980s came around I felt it was time to build up a bit and gain some strength so I got hold of a bench and bar and started working it out. The extra strength and fitness helped with the day job and I did grow a bit so that encouraged me to keep at it.

More recently I was invited to play basketball for a church team (I was 47 then) and once I got the hang of it I loved that sport.

With the basketball I ended up playing in the Australian Master's Games which is an awesome experience, to play against the best in your own age group was a challenge and a steep learning curve.

It was at the Master’s games I saw power lifting being promoted, as it was an individual sport. I thought it seemed like a good idea as I can find team sports difficult to organize and to get everyone turning up. Power lifting where you can challenge yourself and train at home and train on your own seemed to fit the bill nicely.

I only started power lifting as a sport about 5 years ago. I got some coaching and training to start with which helped with technique and showed a real improvement in my strength.

My Dead lift starting weight was 150kg and is now around 210 kg in that time.

The Bench Press has had slower gains but I can just do a little more than my own bodyweight now and the squat can go to double my weight. Not to bad for the mid 50s age range?

It was only this year (2011) that I entered my first strongman comp and came in 6 out of 8 for the lightweight div (I am only 80 kg and aged 56!) so I was the lightest and oldest! It was the hardest event I have ever done but loved it.

Strong man training is an awesome thing to get into but very hard on the body no matter what your age.

I have some of my own equipment such as a yolk, a frame for farmer’s walks and a strongman log. I even have big old pile of natural stone I move about the garden for variety.
